TANJUNG TUALANG DREDGE, the Last Tin Dredge Standing
The
Tanjung Tualang Dredge (henceforth referred to as“The Dredge”) is the
only tin dredge left in the country. It is located at the 5th Mile Batu
Gajah – Tanjung Tualang Road, Batu Gajah, Perak and was one of
Malaysia’s larger tin dredges. The Dredge was designed and built by FW
Payne in 1938 in England.
Formerly owned by Southern Malayan Tin
Dredging (M) Bhd, a subsidiary of Malaysia Mining Corporation Berhad
(MMC), it was in operation for 44 years until August 1982. Subsequently,
MMC donated The Dredge to the Perak State Government as “Warisan Kapal
Korek”. The preservation and maintenance of The Dredge are now being
carried out by Osborne and Chappel Sdn Bhd (OCSB).
Specification of the Tanjung Tualang Dredge
Weight - 4,500 tonnes Pontoon - Length of 75 metres Breath of 35 metres Depth of 3.1 metres Digging depth - 33 metres Bucket capacity - 0.50976 cubic metres Number of buckets - 115 Horse power - 2,247 horse power Dredging capacity - 358, 000 cubic metres
Unfortunately,
this last tin dredge in the country may not be standing for long.
Tilting at the starboard due to leakages of the pontoon, it is in
imminent danger of flipping over and may sink soon if those leakages are
not repaired immediately.
Estimated Financial Requirements to Save and Preserve The Dredge Initial costs to repair leakages and keep The Dredge afloat - RM 1.2 mil Subsequent repair works - RM 5.2 mil Refurbishment of The Dredge - RM 4.0 mil Initial maintenance - RM 1.6 mil
