Vinto aims to move up league (08 Apr 2010)
Bolivian state-owned tin producer Empresa Metalurgica Vinto (EMV) which is currently 7th in ITRI’s ranking of production by tin smelters aims to overtake China’s Yunnan Chengfeng and Thailand’s Thaisarco to be 5th in ranking. EMV’s production increased by 24% to 11,805 tonnes in 2009 and is targeted to rise to 13,000 tonnes in 2010. In 1994, the smelter recorded an all-time record production of 19,959 tonnes. To achieve the above objective EMV will be installing a new Ausmelt plant in the next two years with a capacity to produce some 18,000 tpy of tin metal. About US$150 million capital expenditure has been budgeted for 2010.
US steelmakers concerned about surge in imports (08 Apr 2010) The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has reported a 20% jump in steel import permit applications between February and March, with tinplate imports set to rise by 42%. ITRI launches new association management and events company (07 Apr 2010) ITRI, the international tin industry association, through its commercial subsidiary ITRI Innovation Ltd, is launching a new association management and events company. The company, which was acquired by ITRI Innovation last year, has been re-named Cognition AM Ltd and is planning to expand its activities, primarily in the electronics, technology, engineering, and metals sectors. Cognition is based at ITRI’s headquarters in Frogmore, Hertfordshire. Korea tender shows rising premiums (05 Apr 2010) The latest re-issued tender by South Korea’s Public Procurement Service (PPS) offered further evidence of supply tightness and rising physical tin premiums in Asia. The agency had bought 200 tonnes of standard grade Malaysian 99.85% tin at a premium of US$370 per tonne c.i.f. over the London Metal Exchange cash price to be shipped by June 2 to the port of Incheon. The contract was awarded to Daewoo International. At its previous tender for standard grade tin, for shipment by 30 April, the premium was US$230 per tonne. The PPS plans to buy 1,910 tonnes of tin in 2010 and has so far purchased 800 tonnes.
