Top Tin Producers in 2009 (02 Feb 2010)

Data collected by ITRI showed the top six tin producers in the world as follows:

Yunnan Tin (China) 55,898 tonnes
PT Timah (Indonesia) 45,800 tonnes
Malaysian Smelting Corp (Malaysia) 36,407 tonnes
Minsur (Peru) 33,920 tonnes
Thaisarco (Thailand) 19,300 tonnes
Yunnan Chengfeng (China) 14,947 tonnes.

All are members of ITRI.  The total tin production from ITRI member countries in 2009 was 229,000 tonnes and accounted for just over 70% of estimated world tin metal production last year.

 

Tinplate outperforms other CIS steel market (02 Feb 2010)

Recently published official statistics and company results showed that Magnitorgorsk Iron & Steel Works in Russia and ArcelorMittal Temirtau in Kazakstan produced 212,000 tonnes and 201,000 tonnes of tinplate, respectively in 2009.  The two companies are the sole producers in their respective countries.  It was also reported that the tinplate business performed better than the other sectors of the steel industry in Russia and Kazakhstan.

Indonesian tin gains share in Japan market (02 Feb 2010)

According to Mitsubishi Corporation Unimetals, Japan’s total refined tin imports last year fell by 30% to 22,107 tonnes.

The supply came mainly from Indonesia (13,484 tonnes, 61% of the market), up 14% from 2008, followed by Thailand (5,658 tonnes, 26%) and Malaysia (2,285 tonnes, 10%).  While the supply from Indonesia increased, supplies from the other countries fell, Thailand by 43%, Malaysia 62% and China 80%.

Peru tin production falls in 2009 (28 Jan 2010)

Peru’s production of tin-in-concentrates fell by 3.9% to 37,503 tonnes in 2009.  Peru is the world’s third largest tin miner, after China and Indonesia, and all its production comes from Minsur’s San Rafael mine.  Refined tin production by Minsur’s Funsur subsidiary also declined in 2009, dropping by 10.6% to 33,920 tonnes.

EU tinplate market steady (28 Jan 2010)

Tinplate producers in the EU reduced tinplate production by about 10% in 2009 in order to bring supply in line with demand and is unlikely to step up production if demand remains slow.
