The New York Times is the latest leading US newspaper to voice criticism of the impact of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act on artisanal miners and their dependents in central Africa. Headlined “How Congress Devastated Congo”, the article described in detailed the negative impact of the law which has brought about a de facto embargo on the minerals mined in the region, including tin, tungsten and tantalum. The smelting companies that used to buy from eastern Congo have stopped. This has affected the livelihood of scores of artisanal miners and small-scale purchasers who used to make a few dollars a day digging ore out of mountainsides with hand tools.
