ITRI announces results of New Annual Tin Market Survey (09 Feb 2010)

ITRI has released the results of its 5th Annual Tin Use and Recycling Survey.

The main findings of the latest study by ITRI are as follows:
•    Global estimated tin consumption fell 6.1% from 360,500 tonnes in 2007 to 338,400 tonnes in 2008.
•    The solder industry continues to account for over half of refined tin consumption, although its market share has declined marginally from 2007.
•    Tinplate’s share of the market has increased slightly, to over 17% in 2008, as the tonnage of tin used in this application remained stable while use in other products fell.
•    Estimated tin use in almost all applications declined in 2009 with the exception of float glass as a result of the construction of new plants last year.
•    More tin is recycled in alloy form than as refined metal.

A total of 147 companies worldwide using over 147,000 tonnes of refined tin (or 43.6% of estimated tin use globally in 2008) took part in the above survey.
