The world’s smallest snowman made from tin (22 Dec 2009)
Scientists at NPL, UK have made the world’s smallest snowman out of tin.
At 0.01mm across it is only a fifth the width of a typical strand of hair. It is made from two tin beads, which are normally used to calibrate electron microscopes, welded together with platinum. A focused beam of platinum ions was used to deposit metal and create the figure’s nose. An ion beam was also used to gouge out the eyes and mouth.
Huanuni mine boost output (22 Dec 2009) An official from Bolivia’s mining and metallurgy ministry reported that state-owned Huanuni mine is expected to produce 9,320 tonnes of tin-in-concentrate in 2009, up by 18% compared to last year and a new record for the operation. Daily ore throughput at the mine has already increased from around 1,000 tpd last year to some 1500 tpd now and the Bolivian government is currently working on plans to expand to 3,000 tpd in the next few years. Rise in Indonesian tin shipments (17 Dec 2009) Indonesia exported an estimated 8,166 tonnes of refined tin in November, 86% higher than the 4,381 tonnes exported in the same month in 2008. A total of 21 smelters exported tin during the month compared to four in the same month in 2008. The cumulative tonnage of refined tin exported January to November 2009 was 90,779 tonnes, 7.6% up against the 84,356 tonnes exported during the same period in 2008. Malaysian cable maker plans tin mining operation (17 Dec 2009) Wire and cable maker Ho Wah Genting Bhd has secured a concession agreement from the Perak State Government to mine tin until 2018 at a 202 hectare site in Pengkalan Hulu, Grik, Perak. The company will invest RM15 million (about US$4.4) to purchase machinery and equipment, which should be in place by Q2 2010. The planned annual capacity is 1,200 tonnes of tin which will provide an annual income of US$18 million a year based on a tin price of US$15,000 a tonne. (Source ITRI)
