There are four universities offering Mineral Resource and Geology related courses in Malaysia. The universities are University Science Malaysia (USM), University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), University Malaya and University Malaysia Sabah. UNIVERSITY SCIENCE MALAYSIA (USM) UNIVERSITY SCIENCE MALAYSIA (USM), located in Penang was founded in 1969 and it is one of the most established institutions of higher learning in the area of science and technology in Malaysia. The School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering (SMMRE) plays a central and major role in teaching and research in materials engineering, mineral resources engineering and polymer engineering. The school's academic and research activities cover all major areas of the three programmes, and this is reflected in the four-year undergraduate engineering degree and graduate degree offered by the school.
Undergraduate Programmes
Bachelor Of Engineering (Honours), Mineral Resources Engineering This programme prepares graduates to be suitable for employment as mining, quarrying or mineral processing engineers or even as metallurgists. Courses covered are basic engineering courses, geology, mineralogy, surveying, mining engineering, geomechanics, mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, environmental engineering and other courses related to mineral extraction. The main objective of the undergraduate programme is to train and produce highly qualified and competent engineers in their respective specialization to serve the industry and public sectors locally and internationally. The comprehensive four-year (8 semesters) programme is designed to cover the fundamental as well as the applied engineering aspects consisting of processing/production, preservation, analysis, quality control and maintenance. To date, the three programmes have received full accreditation from the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

Graduates of BSC. Degree in Mineral Resources Engineering will benefit from a good career prospect as their educations in USM are tailored towards the industrial needs. Upon graduating, they could work in the manufacturing and process industry, consultancy and engineering services, quarry, mines, research centers, institute of higher learning, training or government agencies. Other career opportunities also include process or production engineer, maintenance engineer, site engineer, site manager, design engineer, plant engineer, quality control engineer, researcher and others.
Graduate Programmes MSc. & PhD - SMMRE offers master (MSc.) and PhD (by Research) in the field of Mineral Resources Engineering. The objective of these programmes is to provide candidates with the opportunity to further their studies and to achieve academic maturity via research that is beneficial and significant to the community at large. In recent years, almost 20% of postgraduate students are from overseas. Research Activities - SMMRE conducts a variety of research activities covering various research themes centred on mining engineering, mineral processing engineering and geology engineering. Academic members of the school have research portfolios that encompass variety of research topics allowing multidisciplinary works within the school, the university and other academic institutions either nationally or internationally. The school research is disseminated by publications, including journal articles, conference presentation, proceedings and theses.

UKM offered an undergraduate programme of Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology and a graduate programme of Master in Science Degree in Industrial Minerals.
UKM also conducted extensive research work in the following areas of Geology. * Engineering and environmental geology and geophysics * Basin study and petroleum geology * Economics geology and industrial mineral research * Environmental contaminants and dynamics * Environmental monitoring and assessment * Sustainable use of natural resources * Biodiversity and systematics * Genetics and breeding * Ecology and conservation
Further information on UM, click http://www.ukm.my UNIVERSITY MALAYA (UM) UNIVERSITY MALAYA (UM), Kuala Lumpur, the oldest university in the country, was originally established in Singapore in 1949 with the merger of the King Edward VII College of Medicine (founded in 1905) and Raffles College (founded in 1928). The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions in 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur.
In 1960, the government of the two territories indicated their desire to change the status of the Divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961, and in January 1962, the former Kuala Lumpur division was established as the University of Malaya, deriving its name from the term 'Malaya' as the country was then known. Meanwhile the Singapore division was renamed the University of Singapore, the predecessor of today's National University of Singapore, UM DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY The UM department of Geology is the oldest geology department in the country. It was founded in Singapore in 1956 and relocated to the Kuala Lumpur Campus in 1960. Besides academic programme, The Department is also active in postgraduate research. The field of research being pursued ranges from fundamental geology to more applied fields such as geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology and petroleum geology.
Undergraduate Programme The Department accepts about 40-60 undergraduates for their 3-year BSc Degree in Geology and Applied Geology each year. As an integral part of the undergraduates’ education, the Department also carries out fieldwork training in various part of the country. Postgraduate Programme Master - For admission to the Masters degree programme either by research or coursework, the candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours from the University of Malaya in the appropriate discipline or its equivalent as recognised by the University of Malaya Senate. A candidate with lesser qualifications may be admitted based on suitable working experience in the relevant field.
PhD - For admission to the PhD programme the candidate must possess a Master degree from the University of Malaya or its equivalent as recognised by the University of Malaya Senate. Registered MSc students have the opportunity to convert their candidature to a PhD if their research progresses have been deemed to be excellent. Application for conversion has to be made at least 1 year and no later than 2 years after commencement of the MSc candidature.

The UMS Department of Geology offered a Bachelor of Science Degree programme covering a wide range specialisation in geology including petroleum geology, economic geology, engineering geology and environmental geology.
The UMS geology programme aims to provide the students an in-depth understanding of how the earth works. Its areas of studies, includes: * The search for and development of natural resources, such as petroleum, water, gas, coal, minerals and construction materials; * The investigation of foundations for all types of structures, such as dams, bridges, high-rise buildings, and residences; * The evaluation of geologic conditions along tunnels, pipelines and highway routes; * The evaluation of natural geologic hazards, such as landslides, floods and earthquakes; and * The characterization and evaluation of unique geological features for geotourism.
The programme also specifically aims to provide students with a sufficient understanding of : * The origin, formation, structures and composition of the earth; * The many internal and external dynamic geological processes that shapes the surface of the earth and how they are related to our daily life;
* The origin and formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, and the natural resources associated with each of them; and * The techniques in geological mapping, investigation and evaluation of geologic conditions of a particular area for all sorts of purposes.
